How income tax works for the self-employed in Ireland
If you earn income outside the PAYE system — as a sole trader, landlord, or with a side business — you file a Form 11 under Revenue’s self-assessment system. Your taxable profit is your income minus allowable business expenses. On that profit you pay three charges:
- Income Tax — 20% up to your standard-rate cut-off, 40% above it, reduced by your tax credits.
- USC — the Universal Social Charge, applied in bands once your income passes the exemption threshold.
- PRSI — Pay Related Social Insurance (Class S for the self-employed), with an annual minimum.
This calculator gives you an indicative figure so you can plan ahead and set money aside. For a step-by-step walkthrough of filing your return, see our guides.
